Comcast claims it will be able to start selling gigabit internet service this year thanks to a new chip from Broadcom. This type of service is generally only available from providers using fiber to deliver content to their customers. Broadcom claims that the reference unit for this new cable modem will allow for up to 2 Gigabits a second transfer rate in home environments and features a built in Wireless Access Point. Comcast has yet to comment on the pricing for this future service option, though it is expected that this service will be costly if Comcast’s current pricing structure is anything to make assumptions from.
